Isomeric pyridyl-thiazole donor units for metal ion recognition in bi- and tri-metallic helicatesw

Underlying recognition phenomena in multi-component self-assembly processes can be exploited for the site-specific inclusion of different metal ions into polymetallic arrays. In the field of metallosupramolecular chemistry this is typically accomplished by programming either (i) the denticity of or (ii) the nature of the donor atoms in the binding sites of a polytopic ligand, prior to self-asse...

Synthesis and Coordination Chemistry of Ligands for Supramolecular Chemistry and Sensing Applications

A series of multidentate N-donor ligands have been synthesised all containing pyridyl and pyridyl/thiazole units and their coordination behaviour is described. The ligands are classified into four types; i) terpyridine containing pyridyl/thiazole ligands (L); ii) pyridyl/thiazole ligands containing a 3,3′-disubstituted bipyridine core. (L); iii) 2,2′-bipyridine containing a crown ether moiety (...

Controlling the formation of metallosupramolecular assemblies by metal ionic radiiw

Controlling the structure of multi-component assemblies is one of the leading challenges for the supramolecular chemist. One of the simplest assemblies is the dinuclear doublestranded helicate, and the rules that govern the formation of this species are largely established. The formation of the helicates’ higher nuclearity cousin, the cyclic helicate, is conversely less well understood. One of ...

A simple thermodynamic model for quantitatively addressing cooperativity in multicomponent self-assembly processes--Part 2: Extension to multimetallic helicates possessing different binding sites.

The extended site-binding model, which explicitly separates intramolecular interactions (i.e., intermetallic and interligand) from the successive binding of metal ions to polytopic receptors, is used for unravelling the self-assembly of trimetallic double-stranded Cu(I) and triple-stranded Eu(III) helicates. A thorough analysis of the available stability constants systematically shows that nega...

Linear polynuclear helicates as a link between discrete supramolecular complexes and programmed infinite polymetallic chains.

The contribution of the solvation energies to the assembly of polynuclear helicates reduces the free energy of intermetallic repulsion, DeltaE(MM), in condensed phase to such an extent that stable D(3)-symmetrical tetranuclear lanthanide-containing triple-stranded helicates [Ln(4)(L4)(3)](12+) are quantitatively produced at millimolar concentrations, despite the twelve positive charge borne by ...
